“I am not worthy of”.
This was the third phone conversation he was having on that day when he heard the same sentence. In all three of the conversations he listened the same thing from different assistants. As he was listening he was asking himself: “What is wrong with them, did I do wrong something wrong? Maybe I missed something.” He was a professor for a long time. He had many asisstants through out the years but this last bunch was different. He has seen self-confidence problems before but this was different.
He was in his office which was full of books and papers. He liked the smell of the books, especially old ones. Probably that was why he had so many of them. There were bookshelves all over the walls behind him. His desk was by the window. He liked looking out as he was thinking. He was looking out of the window as he was speaking as well searching for an answer. He was sitting in his comfortable chair that he had for many years. The chair was almost at the same shape as his body. He listened the problems of many new teachers, assistants, professors in this chair. He had many years of experience. In most of the cases he was able to offer them a solution or help them find their way. But with this bunch, they were different. He was explaining them, showing them but still having similar issues.
He had very high hopes with this new assistant group when they arrived. They seemed more talented, capable, compared to previous groups he worked with. They were relatively quick in understanding. They were taking the information in very easily. They could fulfill the tasks quicker than earlier assistants he had. But this job, teaching was not their focus.. They all wanted to learn a lot but he thought maybe not to teach. They were keen on getting the knowledge to make themselves better, to apply in their own life not necessarily to make other people better. Maybe, he thought that was the reason they are relcutant to teach.
He already knew that if you do not teach what you know you cannot learn more. He told this many times.
Knowledge is like a lake or a body of water that is fed by streams. If there is no movement in the lake, if there is no inflow or outflow the water will be polluted. If there is no outgoing stream but only inflows than water will exceed the capacity of the lake and there will be floods. Not a preferred scenario for human brain. The best scenario is a lake has infow of fresh water from many streams and also outflows through many streams. By this way the water in the lake is alwys clean and fresh.
This is what he kept telling to his assistants. “To learn more, to have deeper knowledge you need to teach what you know. You need to interact with people. Explain them what you have, show them what you know so that you can keep learning. Life is larger than you, larger than a single person.”
“I am not worthy of.” said his student once more.
He awoke from his thoughts and decided to give another try.
“For what?” he asked.
“To teach to this class.”
“But why? You know enough to teach.”
“But I do not know it all. I did not yet learn everything perfectly.”
Here we go again thought the proefessor as he continued:
“Nobody can know it all. Remember you are only human! You will not know more if you do not teach that is for certain!”

Finding the truth is not that difficult. It is possible to reach real information by passing the experiences of people who have lived in the past through the consistency test.
